This post was scheduled a few weeks ago. News broke yesterday that David Haas, who wrote many beloved hymns for Christian worship, has been accused of “many credible accounts of sexually predatory and abusive behavior.” My heart weeps for his victims, and for all of us in the church who overlooked his behavior in order to keep singing his music.
I will keep this post up, as the words are based on a Navajo prayer, and I believe that the message persists despite Haas’s arrangement of it into song. But I pray that the church will do better in the future at holding abusers accountable, even when they have achieved some level of fame or notoriety. May peace surround all those who have been hurt by Haas, and other abusers.
